Loxley II

So, following on from a previous meetup between a few of us revolutionaries (held down in Wakefield), we’ve decided to hold a second event, in Leeds.  For those currently out of the loop, these are open meetups for anyone interested in a reform of the monetary system and surrounding culture for social good.  In short, our aim is to change the system to one that benefits the many, rather than the few.

Outcomes of the last meeting were roughly:

  • We want to start some form of grassroots movement to educate people about the flaws of the current financial system and the consequences of carrying on the way we are.
  • One arm of that movement should be activist, organising meetings, talks by reformists, literature printing and direct protest.
  • Another should support the formation of worker cooperatives and social businesses, to reform the current economy from within.
  • We also need to consider conventional political channels and our relationship with existing parties.

My suggested agenda for the second meetup (don’t worry, it’s fluid; this isn’t some corporate job):

  • Catchup: state of society, plan for progression.  I’ll talk through this with help from Ivor and Alan.
  • Q: How do we define our movement? What is our relationship to existing cooperative, Socialist and socially liberal movements?
  • Q:What is our relationship to existing protests? Can we help give them direction?
  • Q: How do we best educate the public and gain support?
  • Q: How to we progress our organisation from a group of people in a pub into a force for good?

Basically the night will kick off with me talking over the consensus from last time and move onto debate over where to go from here.

This will be held at the Adelphi  in Leeds, 8pm on Monday the 10th of October 2011 and carry on until we’re out of ideas or totally drunk.

To give an idea of numbers, please RSVP to dan at danladds.com or @danladds on twitter.  You can still turn up if you don’t, but it’d be cool to have a idea on numbers.  It’s completely free, just buy a beer or something.

You can tweet in relation to this and future events using the hashtag #Loxley

With the state of the world as it is, it’s easy to feel helpless, but small groups like this can go on to change big things.  Even with just a handful of us last time, we made good progress.  Let’s start something.

Shameless plug: since the last meetup I finished writing my book. It doesn’t speak for everyone, but it illustates my views.  Please see: The Revolution of Hope.
